Description
The Office of Labour, Social Affairs and Family (ÚPSVaR) also provides support to citizens of Ukraine and their family members who have a document of tolerated residence in the territory of the Slovak Republic marked “Ukrainian immigrant”.
The following are considered a family member of a Ukrainian citizen:
- husband and wife (they do not necessarily have to have Ukrainian citizenship)
- minor child
- parent of a minor child who is a Ukrainian citizen
Employment
ÚPSVaR provides consultations and assistance in looking for a job. If you are interested, you can contact the ÚPSVaR in your place of residence in order to find a job vacancy. You can find an overview of job offers at ISTP.sk.
Employers may employ Ukrainian citizens who have been granted the status of temporary protection in the following forms:
- employment relationship (based on i.e. employment contract)
- agreements on work outside employment relationship.
Material need benefits
Ukrainian citizens can also receive material need benefits if they meet the conditions set by law.
It is necessary to submit a certificate of temporary protection in person at the office or by post together with the application for material need benefit. The office staff will provide you with the necessary forms or you can find them at the reception in the office.
In case there is a greater number of mothers and children staying in one place, our field workers can come to the place of residence. However, the application must be sent by post or e-mail including complete contact information (your name, address, phone number).
Material need benefits are paid at a post office in the place of residence after 18th day of the relevant month.
Meal subsidy
If you have been granted legal residence in Slovakia, your child attends school or kindergarten, you can get a meal subsidy in the school canteen.
The meal subsidy is provided to children from families receiving material need benefits (see above) or whose monthly income does not exceed the amount of living wage.
The amount of meal subsidy ranges from EUR 1.40 to 2.30 per day.
You may be granted the meal subsidy if your child meets one of the following conditions:
he/she attends the last year of a kindergarten,
he/she studies in any grade of a primary school,
he/she studies in the 1st to 4th grade of an eight-year secondary grammar school, or
he/she studies in the 1st grade of a five-year program at a secondary school after being admitted from the eighth grade of a primary school.
Download recommended return slip (DOCX file, 30 kB), fill in and sign the form and submit it to administrative workers in the school or kindergarten your child attend.
School workers in a school or a kindergarten will provide you with more information or read the information on the official ÚPSVaR website at meal subsidy.

- The services are not available on public holidays.
- People from Ukraine who have been granted the status of temporary protection are entitled to the services.
- The entrance is not barrier-free in all facilities.
- The services are also provided by female staff.
- The services are free of charge.
